The role of the partner and associate:

The main partner “Faculty of Agriculture – Fayoum University -” water and Soil lab “:

The partner is responsible for sampling of the experimental fields of land and analyzed in terms of fertility and contain the elements, in order to select the experimental fields that can be successfully applied to new agricultural practices. Continue the main partner also provides experts to conduct a full analysis in addition to the field work and preparing of a geographical database and also provide consulting and technical and training assistance.

The project’s associate is “the Central Laboratory of Organic Agriculture (CLOA)”:

the project’s associate has already contributed to implement the practical training for the project’s farmers involved in the project on compost preparation “organic fertilizer”, also training Beahmo and Zawiat El Karadsah farmers on Vermi compost (Bio fertilizer), it’s the first time to implement that initiative in Fayoum from (CLOA & FAODA).

Project achievements:

First: Capacity Building team:

  • The team started to build capacity for 6 NGOs in the targeted villages after their compliance with selection criteria for partner associations, the needed trainings related to institutional building were determined through applying a form of institutional building evaluation.
  • Project partner associations:
  • Actually 5 training topics have been presented which are internal governance, strategic planning, and resources mobilization for nongovernmental organizations, executive management and financial management for 188 of board members of partner associations, their employees and the general association members.
  • After the partner associations have got the trainings (internal governance and strategic planning):
  • Those associations (society development at Zawyat El karadsa, Society development at Beahmo and developing small farmers at Tobhar) has become with a vision, a message, strategic goals, SWOT analysis and strategic plan.
  • Al Akeeda charity and society development association at El Safraya has become with a vision, message and strategic goals and they are working on the strategic plan.
  • Regarding the Egyptian Arabic association for society development at Samaan, it already has a vision, and a message but after getting the trainings previously mentioned, some modifications have been adjusted on the vision and the message, it became with strategic goals, SWOT analysis and a new strategic plan.
  • Finally society development association at Al Aagamyeen, already has a vision but after getting the trainings previously mentioned, some modifications were adjusted on the message, strategic goals, SWOT analysis and a strategic plan
  • Providing the 6 partner associations (computer) (first conditional incentive) after a meeting with partner associations’ chairmen at project headquarter, signing conditional incentive contracts and training for 2 employees of each association on basic steps for using the computer.
  • Implementing technical support visits for the associations periodically by the team to complete and make sure of achieving the training goals for associations through following their activities and documenting the training outputs.
  • In cooperation with communication team: the partner associations have got panels of the vision, message and goals after re writing it through the training they have got on internal governance with the institutional building team.
  • The team prepared the triple contracts for the partner associations.
  • Finally, the team provided them with the needed support to set a system for the files in which to facilitate getting back to any document when needed as each association became having a file of all activities (reports, plans, forms, contracts).
  • In cooperation with M&E team: the institutional building team participated in evaluating the associations, clarifying the importance of M&E committee role in making the decision of providing them with the conditional incentive (Agro equipment) in partnership with FAODA and determining its management rate based on evaluation feedback.
  • The team prepared a meeting with partner associations’ board chairmen to present evaluation results and to find ways of cooperation about conditional incentive and its management.

Problems and challenges:

  • We faced some challenges during work with the association, we have overcome most of them through the project institutional team experience, also an institutional evaluation was done to the associations based on a recommendation by project consultant who evaluated the project in Feb. 2015 to focus on weakness and strength points after checking availability of managing conditional incentive, actually 5 associations were selected out of the 6 to manage conditional incentive but the sixth association refused the evaluation which is (society development association at Al Aagameen).

Second: Achievements of Agro Ecology component:

  • Agro Ecology team started with selecting the experimental farms in according to specific criteria, then they taking samples of the experimental farms in the targeted villages in cooperation with the (Faculty of Agriculture -Fayoum University).
  • Agro Ecology team implemented theoretical and practical trainings for 1227 farmers and GEWs out of 1500 to rehabilitate them for applying good agricultural practices in their farms, and implement cross visits between Biahmo, Samaan, Zawyet El Karadsa village to Abo Gonsho Village to view drip irrigation.
  • Prepare (10) compost piles practically “organic fertilizer” in cooperation with the associate (CLOA).
  • Not only targeting men farmers, but also rural women for her main role to success the project’s implementation in rural villages, so rural women were trained on “the role of women in decision-making” in cooperation between Agro Ecology & Capacity Building components in order to encourage and support the participation of women in rural labor.
  • In the second year of the project, Agro Ecology team applied the modern irrigation system in the targeted farms in according to the policy of the country to develop field irrigation systems, also these systems have been included within the conditional incentive to farmers.
  • Activities of modern irrigation experiment: where the Laboratory of land and water analysis in the Faculty of Agriculture,Fayoum University(the project’s main partner) analyzed the soil for each farm and in according to  the results of this analysis, irrigation system was determined system, which varied between irrigation system pipes and drip irrigation system.
  • The implementation company that has been selected in according to the tender, and under the supervision of agro ecology team to install all irrigation lines in the experimental farms which have had significant impact to rationalize irrigation water, also to help farmers to limit using the amount of water for crops in addition to saving a lot of efforts in irrigation activities in farms.
  • Then, Compost making equipment were received.
  • 18 Oct. 2015, Visit of Undersecretary of Ministry of Agriculture in Fayoum to implement field visit to Samaan experimental farm.
  • Implement follow up field visits to the experimental farms (medicinal and aromatic plants Consultant as a representative of CLOA)

Ecology activities in the experimental farms:

  • For Zawyet Al Karadsa village:(Haj /Mohamed Fathy)… One of the project’s beneficiaries in Zawyet El Karadsa village, Where agro ecology team had prepared compost pile in his own farm, Now he sells large part of that pile to the targeted village for a nominal fee.
  • Organic garlic crop has already been harvested, and its weight was great, where the production of 1 acre was about 13,300kg (the highest production of traditional agriculture about 10:11tons).
  • For Abo Gonsho Village _ El Safraya: The owners of experimental farm in Abo Gonsho _ El Safraya expanded their drip irrigation system for the rest of their farm and linked it to their experimental farm by their own efforts, after receiving technical advices from the implementing company of irrigation systems.
  • The quality of Chamomile in the experimental farm encouraged other farmers to ask about the used agricultural program for the high quality of the crop and the high amount per one cut.
  • For Beahmo & Samaan villages: Farmers of Beahmo & Samaan experimental farms convinced to plant medicinal and aromatic plants like “fennel, mint, basil, black seed” despite their strong interest in planting traditional crops, and now we follow the harvest of those crops, and do comparisons between the production of these crops and the production of other similar traditional crops.
